Growth Mindset W6: Sharing Mindset With My Wife

For this assignment I am choosing option #3, in which we are supposed to share our ideas of growth mindset with someone we know. I chose to discuss the idea with my wife. This conversation actually came up organically before I even knew about this assignment, when a couple of days ago my wife said that she was never good at math. Right when she said this it made me think of growth mindset theory and how she had a fixed mindset when it came to math, simply stating that she wasn't good at it, and not realizing that she could get better if she put in the proper effort. I told her how I was always good at math, and I enjoyed doing it more than other subjects because it came easy to me and people would alway praise me for being "lucky I am good at math". In retrospect, I wish I would have spent more time and effort on my writing abilities, because I had to put a lot of extra work in during high school to get somewhat decent at writing.

We then discussed how we would like to raise our son, and how we want to reward him for putting effort in and improving, rather than just succeeding, that way he will not only do things that are easy for him, but he will actually seek out challenging situations that he can improve in. I think that growth mindset is a great philosophy to live by, and I look forward to teaching my son how to be persistent and keep trying through adversity.
