The Big Sleep
I began my wikipedia trail this week with my novel that I have been reading the last three weeks, The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler. One thing that I learned in this page is that the book was actually made into a movie twice: once in 1946 and once in 1978. I clicked on the link that took me to the original movie to see who was in it and how it was received.
The Big Sleep (1946 Film)
One thing I found interesting on this page was that the 1978 version was much more true to the book, since there was less restriction on what they could put in film at that time, however the 1946 version was much more popular and better received. The original starred Humphrey Bogart as Philip Marlowe, who I do not know but I have heard the name, so I decided to look into him.
Humphrey Bogart
One thing I learned about Humphrey Bogart was that he was in the navy during WWI and began acting in theater and eventually in film after a few failed career attempts. He was a huge actor back in the 40's, especially in crime and detective movies. He starred in Casablanca, which is probably his most famous role, as well as The Maltese Falcon, which is is another book that I have read. He was married in real life to Lauren Bacall, who played Vivian in The Big Sleep with him.
Casablanca
I found it very interesting that no one involved in the production of Casablanca thought that it would be anything other than a mildly successful film that year. Little did they know it would become one of the most iconic movies of all time. I also found it interesting that the rushed to release the movie to take advantage of the publicity from an Allied invasion in North Africa a few weeks earlier.
Hi Anthony,
ReplyDeleteThank you for all the information. I did not know that Humphrey Bogart was in the Navy during WW11. All I know was he was one of the greatest actor of his time. Handsome and talented in his time, born in New York but lived and died here in California.
Thank you
Ginalyn
Hey Anthony, I really thought those were some cool facts about Humphrey Bogart. I love watching his and his wife's movies, as well as movies featuring Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe, and Carey Grant. I didn't know that the Big Sleep movie was redone in the 70s either. I never saw the second film. Have you seen either one previous to reading the book? Hope you enjoyed the book!
