Yosemite National Park
Yosemite covers 747,956 acres and is a part of the U.S. National Park Service. It was designated a World Heritage Site in 1984 and is recognized for its granite rock faces, waterfalls, sequoia trees, and a lot more. Around 4 million people visit Yosemite every year, spending most of their time in the tourist area of Yosemite Valley. John Muir, who's writing we read this week, was largely responsible for making the greater Yosemite area a National Park, and paving the way for the U.S. National Park System.
World Heritage Site
From the Yosemite wiki I was led to the website for World Heritage Site. Here I learned that this is a landmark or area that is selected by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization has having historical, cultural, or some other form of. significance. These sites are protected and judged to be important to all of humanity.
World Heritage Sites By Country
From World Heritage Site, I clicked the link to the page for World Heritage Sites by Country. From this page I learned that Italy, China, Spain, France, and Germany have the most World Heritage Sites in that order. Since my ancestors are from Italy, I decided to try and take a look at what World Heritage Sites are located in Italy.
List of World Heritage Sites in Italy
On this page I learned a lot about the many different World Heritage Sites that are from Italy, and I urge everyone to check out the complete list. One that I picked out specifically and found interesting was Archaeological Areas of Pompei, Herculaneum, and Torre Annunziata, which are the remains of the two towns that were buried by the legendary eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. These towns are amazing because they were preserved in a very uncommon way because of how quick they were buried, showing a great picture of what life was like in that point in time unlike anything else uncovered to date.
